Estrone

Main Entry: esˇtrone

Pronunciation: es- tr n
Variant(s): or chiefly British oesˇtrone / - str n/
Function: noun

: a natural estrogenic hormone that is a ketone C18H22O2 found in the body chiefly as a metabolite of estradiol, is also secreted especially by the ovaries, and is used to treat various conditions (as ovarian failure and menopausal symptoms) relating to estrogen deficiency

Estrone is one of three naturally occurring hormones, the other two being estradiol and estriol. It is primarily produced from androstenedione originating from the gonads or the adrenal cortex.

In pre-menopausal women, more than 50% of the estrone is produced by the ovaries. In children, men, and non-supplemented post-menopausal women, most of the estrone is secreted peripheral tissue conversion of androstenedione.

In pre-menopausal women most of their estrone levels are equal to the level of estradiol. After menopause, estrone levels increase. This is possibly due to an increased conversion of androstenedione to estrone.
